Vaccination Season!

The spring season is upon us and planning your Horse’s preventative care program should be underway.  The American Veterinary Medical Association defines core vaccinations as those that protect from diseases endemic to the area, public health significance, highly infectious or causing severe disease and those required by law.  Core vaccines are safe, effective and have low risk to the equine patient.  The following are core vaccines and recommended to be administered to your horse annually.  EEE ( Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis), WEE ( Western Equine Encephalomyelitis), Rabies, Tetanus, and WNV (West Nile Virus).

There are many risk based vaccinations available dependent on the region and intended use of an animal.  For our area the following vaccinations should be considered.  EHV ( Equine Herpes Virus), EIV ( Equine Influenza Virus), PHF (Potomac Horse Fever), and Strangles.  For further detailed information on equine vaccination please reference American Association of Equine Practitioners Association or Boehringer Ingelheim Equine.

Some horses may have requirements on specific time lines for show or travel, our goal is to have spring vaccinations to completed by June to provide the best protection for your horses.
