Spring is on its way again which means it’s time to prepare for the arrival of our spring calf crop. Remember, the biggest key to having healthy calves is to start with healthy cows. This means providing optimal nutrition for the mothers-to-be, as well as an up to date vaccination and deworming program. Vaccination of pregnant cows prior to calving provides optimum quality colostrum for the calf which is ideal for immune function. Calves should receive 4 quarts of colostrum in the first 6 hours after birth. An injectable Selenium supplement is also important for our Michigan calves to ward against White Muscle Disease. Oral and/or intranasal vaccines are also available to boost immunity in young calves depending upon individual management practices
